“We just simply are doing nothing in the urban areas anymore,” Ann Dickinson, a committeewoman from Missouri, said in an interview. “We have recruited great African-American candidates, and we have helped them in every possible way, and their own community won’t vote for them. Even if they’re better, and they know they’re better, they’ll vote for a Democrat. They’ll vote for a Caucasian over their own person who knows their interests and needs, if they’re a Republican. Nobody knows how to change that.”

Should Obama close Guantanamo?

Barack Obama finds himself in a tight spot over Guantanamo Bay. He has promised to close it, and the issue is obviously a key one for his liberal base. But George Bush has been attempting to close the detention camp for the last two years. The question is: what to do with the inmates? Had the camp never been built, they could have been charged with crimes, tried, and legitimately jailed if found guilty. But the manner of their incarceration without trial - even without bringing in allegations of torture - means the chances of a judge now finding they can be fairly tried are slim.
